Mozart’s Viola Quintet, Horn Quintet, and Reicha Wind Quintet.
As a Celebration of the Anna Arts Center’s first season a part of the Southern Illinois Music Festival Family, members of the Southern Illinois Festival Orchestra will be performing a series of chamber works including two unique Mozart quintets. These quintets highlight the viola, his preferred instrument. The first quintet, String Quintet in g-minor, is the second of six viola quintets. It was written around the beginning of the French Revolution and during the time of his father’s deteriorating health. It is suggested that the key g-minor describes his feelings of agitation, desperation, and anguish. This quintet features violinists Michael Barta and Linda Veleckis, violists Alisha Owner and Juan Carlos, and cellist Eric Lenz. Mozart Horn Quintet in E-flat major will also be performed and features Kurt Civilette on horn. Written in 1782, Mozart composed this quintet to display the unique and charismatic tone quality of the Horn in a quintet setting. Rounding out the program is a Wind Quintet by the contemporary composer Anton Reicha.
